At about 5:30am I could hear this gentle rumble in the
distance, like there was a D10 dozer on the nearby beach. Once the boys were up
we headed straight for the lookout to find out that it was the cumulative noise
produced by 14 lobster boats! Ahh the solitude of sleeping beside a lighthouse!
The wind had blown up overnight and had dropped
the temp noticeably, which was great, but not conducive to swimming as we all,
including the Izzygator, hit the beach at Carpenters Rock. One of the great
things about SA is that you are allowed to drive your vehicle on the beach and
the sand, in most places, is as solid as a rock.
We had a game of beach cricket
and had a chat to one of the lobster potters. He had pulled in 75 this morning
and with him getting $90 each the boys did a couple of quick calculations and
had found their future jobs! He offered me the chance to go out with him at 10
to check his amateur pots but today was van park day so we headed to Southend - a HUGE drive...just up the road.
Most van parks have 30, 90, 150 or more sites; it seems like bigger is better – Not Lynnies. It was
an old church camp that has been converted into a van park, so along with the
usual dorm cabins and rec room it also had 10 van sites. All 10 had families
on them, most of them with numerous boys, so ours joined the swarm, disappeared and came back for lunch and
dinner. It was great!
With our new acquisition ready to go, I loaded up the fridge and set
up the TV outside and relaxed into a great afternoon which turned into a great
night chatting with the park regulars over a few beers while watching the
cricket. It was a super friendly park in a cute little fishing village, just
what the doctor ordered!
