Day 91 – 7/3/14 – Denmark WA

Amazingly enough there wasn’t a ripple on the inlet/lake when I climbed out of the van. It was Friday so no school work, and we were ready to hit the beach in double quick time.
View from the van!
The beach is about a 20 minute drive and our first stop was Elephant Rocks, named after the pile of huge granite bolders that sit on the edge of the beach and if you use your imagination they look like a heard of their namesakes frolicking in the shallow water. We rock hopped around to the point and was amazed by the ferocity of the sea. I have been around beaches all of my life seeing waves swollen from cyclones crash onto the shore but they were not even close to the sheer power and churn that this whole coastline displays. I tried to capture it on camera but fell hopelessly short. One of the cool features was blackened domed rocks that the waves would pound into and the white wash would run over the top of, again my camera work couldn’t go close to capturing how awesome it looked.

After watching the surf I could now understand why everybody went to Greens Pool, a natural harbour whose sandy beach is protected by a rocky ‘reef’. We had a great morning swimming and snorkelling around as well as the boys trying to emulate the lounge chairs the German backpackers had made in Adelaide.

We were keen to try and land some more salmon so we headed to Madfish Beach but decided that it was too rough to bother trying. Madfish gets its name as there is a shallow sand bank that runs out to the centre of a long island that runs parallel to the shore. Somehow waves manage to break from both sides of the sandbar and apparently at high tide when the waves crash into each other the fish jump out of the water making them look mad!

We headed back and had an afternoon nap before heading to the local pub to celebrate the beginning of our 4th month on the road as well as catch the Reds playing the Cheetahs. We had a great night and the boys polished of a massive meal each of BBQ pork spare ribs that De would have struggled to finish. We walked the 1km back to the van park by torch light and after a big day were all asleep in a twinkle!

Satellite view for something different!
