Day 44 - 20/1/14 – Robe -> Kingston SE SA

We had no real reason to hang around at the campground and we had seen all of Robe yesterday so we pushed off nice and early and traveled the massive distance to Kingston SE. Now this town has things figured out, from our perspective anyway! Right on the foreshore they have a big area that is designated for free camping. You are only supposed to stay for 1 night and your vehicle is supposed to have its own toilet etc but there is a good ablutions block (got to get with the lingo) across the bike path that also has an outside cold shower. Build it and they will come.....we did and there were 14 other vehicles parked there by night fall.
To give you an idea how this benefits the town I will list below what we spent, which if the camp wasn’t there we may not have:
Bait & Tackle      $30
Gas Refill             $25
Beer & Wine      $62
De’s Haircut        $20 (am thinking of moving here based on that alone)
Postage               $23
Groceries            $78
Bread                  $10
Fuel                     $100
De’s shower       $2
I think my point has been made.....

All in all it was a pretty quite day. Once we’d set up De went looking for a hair stylist and wondered through the main street while the boys played cricket and got a gob full from a cranky old bugger because the soft plastic ball went to close to his precious van. I managed to keep mine shut...must be chilling I thought. Once De returned the boys and I took Izzy to the boat ramp and gave her her first ever wash. I usually am not a big fan of keeping cars clean but it did it make a huge difference.

We laid down for a read and rest for about an hour after lunch and then went for a fish at the end of the jetty that was right in front of our site. On the way along the jetty there were 4 young lads, around 12, fishing and had 8 or 10 bream and silver trevally stuffed into their esky. We had a chat and they suggested we try the end of the jetty down the ramp I soon caught one of the prettiest ugly fish you have ever seen. It has heaps of colours and some weird looking spines coming out its top but the weirdest this is it seem to have some kinds of exoskeleton and it sounded like a drum when you tapped it.

It was something but after half an hour I realised we had fallen for the oldest trick in the book – they buggers had sent us as far away from us so we didn’t take any of their fish; little blighters!! They moved on not long after and Jacko was straight into their spot, even without revealing to him what they had done. We were about to give up, as the wind had picked up again and was blowing at least 50 kms per hour, and I finally managed to land a fish. The best part is that it was a personal best for the this species of fish, the silver trevally!

Err..I may have failed to mention that I have never caught one of these before but it was still a PB! We headed back to camp, the boys played a couple more games of cricket, away from Mr Grumpys van and we all hit the hay!

We had been puzzled by the SE that was after Kingston on every sign and we finally learnt from Bluey, in Townsville, that is stands for South East.....which make me think there must be another Kingston in this state somewhere!

  1. Straight from wikipedia mate: The extension on its name is to distinguish Kingston in the South East (of South Australia) from another 'Kingston' in the state which is now officially named "Kingston-On-Murray"
